Yelp, Angi and Thumbtack Just Put AI on the Phone: What It Means for Cleaning Leads This Quarter

MeetZela TeamEditorial9 min read

The marketplaces that send cleaning companies leads now use AI to qualify and route those leads at any hour. Yelp's Hatch runs OpenAI's GPT-Live-1 voice model, Angi has an agent inside ChatGPT, and Thumbtack's AI intake is going nationwide. The practical change for you: leads arrive faster, later, and by phone, and an unanswered call gets re-routed.

What did Yelp and Hatch announce?

On 9 September 2026 Yelp announced that it had integrated OpenAI's new GPT-Live-1 voice model into two products: Yelp Host, its phone agent for restaurants, and Hatch, its AI communication platform for service businesses (Business Wire, 9 Sep 2026). Yelp said the two products were among the first to deploy the model, on the same day OpenAI made it available in its API (ppc.land, 10 Sep 2026).

Three details matter for cleaning companies:

  • Full-duplex voice. Callers can interrupt, change topic mid-sentence, or talk to someone in the background and the agent keeps up. Yelp says the agents also detect tone (frustration, impatience) and respond to it.
  • Any language. The agents automatically detect and answer in nearly any language, after Yelp Host added 16 languages in July 2026.
  • Scale. Yelp Host handled more than one million restaurant calls between its October 2025 launch and June 2026. Hatch, the service-business side, manages what Yelp describes as tens of millions of leads across voice, text, email and web, and its configuration covers technician availability, service areas, scheduling rules and emergency routing.

Hatch is sold to home-service businesses, which means the voice AI that is now good enough to run restaurant reservations is being pointed at the calls a cleaning company receives and makes.

What did Angi announce?

On 16 September 2026 Angi said it was among the first brands to pilot OpenAI's Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT (GlobeNewswire / Angi, 16 Sep 2026).

How it works: when a ChatGPT user is discussing a home project, an Angi-branded agent can appear in the conversation without the user installing anything. The homeowner talks through the job with the agent, and when they want a pro, they move into Angi's service-request flow and get connected to local businesses. Angi says it has facilitated more than 300 million projects across 300-plus categories since 1995, and the pilot sits alongside the Angi app for ChatGPT it launched earlier in 2026.

For a cleaning company on Angi, the lead now starts as a chat with an AI at whatever hour the homeowner happens to be planning, and ends as a request Angi has to fulfil quickly to justify its placement.

What is Thumbtack doing?

Thumbtack has not announced a September funding round; the $100 million round led by Google Capital that still circulates was from August 2014 (Thumbtack press room). The 2026 news is about product.

On 30 April 2026 Thumbtack introduced an AI-powered experience that lets homeowners describe a problem by text, photo or voice, scopes the project through guided prompts, and matches them to pros from its network of about 300,000 businesses based on expertise, ratings and preferred availability (Business Wire, 30 Apr 2026). It is in nationwide testing with a full rollout planned through 2026. A week earlier Thumbtack shipped a home-services experience inside Anthropic's Claude (Business Wire, 23 Apr 2026).

The pattern across all three companies is the same: AI handles the intake, and the homeowner's expectation of a fast answer is set before your phone ever rings.

What changes for cleaning leads in Q4?

Before September 2026Now
Homeowner fills in a form during the day; you call backHomeowner talks to an AI at 9 pm; the request is already scoped
Lead goes to several pros; first to respond usually winsSame, but "first" is measured in minutes, and marketplaces can see who answered
A missed call means a callback tomorrowA missed call is a signal the marketplace can act on: re-route, re-rank, or charge

Three consequences follow.

1. Leads arrive by phone, at any hour. Voice is the interface these platforms are investing in. Marketplace call-forwarding (the tracked number on your Yelp or Angi profile) will connect more callers directly to your line, including evenings and weekends, because that is when homeowners plan cleaning.

2. Unanswered calls get re-routed. A marketplace that has already scoped the job with AI has no reason to let it sit in your voicemail. Invoca's 2024 home-services call analysis found 27 percent of calls to home-services businesses go unanswered and fewer than 3 percent of callers who reach voicemail leave a message (Invoca, 2024). Those callers move to the next name, and the platform's own AI now helps them do it.

3. Missed calls start costing money directly. Google disclosed on 25 August 2026 that, from 1 October 2026, Local Services Ads calls that ring unanswered for more than 20 seconds during business hours become billable leads (ppc.land, 25 Aug 2026). It is a Google policy, not a Yelp or Angi one, but it sets the direction: the platform sent a real caller, so the platform charges for it.

How do you "own your front desk"?

The marketplaces are automating their side of the call. Your side is the part you control, and it is the part that decides whether an AI-qualified lead becomes a booked clean.

Owning your front desk means four things:

  • Every forwarded call is answered, in seconds, every hour. Not "we call back within the hour." A live answer, a price, and a time slot while the caller is still on the line.
  • Quotes come from your price list, not a guess. The homeowner has already told Angi's or Thumbtack's AI it is a three-bedroom, two-bath, first clean. Whoever answers your phone should be able to say a number for that.
  • Booking goes into your real schedule. A slot offered on the call and confirmed by text closes the lead. A message that says "someone will get back to you" reopens it for your competitors.
  • The record survives. Which platform sent the call, what was quoted, and whether it booked. That is the data you need to decide which marketplace is worth paying for in 2027.

This is what MeetZela is built to do for cleaning companies specifically. Zela answers every call in under a second, 24/7, quotes from the owner's own rate card (bedrooms, bathrooms, frequency, add-ons, per-turnover), books into the live schedule, sends confirmation and reminder texts, takes messages, and warm-transfers anything that needs the owner. Marketplace call-forwarding numbers point at it like any other line. Pricing is set by call volume after a free demo rather than as a published plan; see the AI receptionist hub for how it works by type of cleaning company, or book a demo. MeetZela serves the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand (locations).

Q4 2026 checklist for cleaning companies on marketplaces

Work through this before the pre-holiday rush starts in late October.

  1. Audit your tracked numbers. Call the number on your Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack and Google Business Profile listings from a mobile at 7 pm on a weekday and at 10 am on a Saturday. Note who or what answers, and how long it takes.
  2. Set an answer-time target and measure it. Under 20 seconds is the line Google now uses for LSA. Aim lower.
  3. Write your rate card down. Bedrooms, bathrooms, square-footage bands, deep-clean and move-out premiums, recurring discounts, add-ons. If a human or an AI cannot quote from it in one call, it is not finished.
  4. Turn on same-call booking. Whatever answers the phone must be able to see the live calendar and offer a slot.
  5. Send a confirmation text within a minute of booking. It cuts the "did that go through?" callbacks and the no-shows.
  6. Decide your after-hours policy. "Book it" or "take a message" are both valid; "voicemail" is not, given the re-routing described above.
  7. Prepare for 1 October. If you run Local Services Ads, make sure business-hours calls are answered within 20 seconds, or you will pay for the ones you miss.
  8. Tag the source on every call. Marketplace, Google, referral, repeat. Review the booked-to-answered ratio per source at the end of November.
  9. Update your profiles. Hours, service area and services offered feed the AI matching on all three platforms. Stale profiles get matched to the wrong jobs.
  10. Re-check in January. Thumbtack's rollout and Angi's pilot will change during the quarter. Repeat step 1.

FAQ

Will Yelp, Angi or Thumbtack answer my phone for me?

Not as part of a standard listing. Hatch is a paid Yelp product for service businesses; Angi's and Thumbtack's AI sits on the homeowner side of the lead. Your own line is still your responsibility, and it is the step where most leads are won or lost.

Do I need an AI receptionist if I only get a few marketplace leads a month?

If those leads cost money, yes. A single missed marketplace call is a paid lead you did not use. Below roughly ten calls a month, a strict personal callback rule can work; above that, the calls you miss while cleaning outnumber the ones you catch.

Does this affect cleaning companies outside the US?

Angi and Thumbtack are US marketplaces. Yelp's Hatch is US-focused. The underlying shift, homeowners using AI to scope a job and expecting an immediate answer, applies wherever people search for cleaners, and MeetZela covers the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
